Chios island Mastic gum !

The main produce of the island is mastic, the well-known resin exuded from the bark of the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus).

Mastic is produced exclusively in Chios and to be more precise, it should be pointed out that the tree grows only in the south part of the island. It appears in the form of a tear and is collected by bleeding from small cuts made in the bark of the tree curved with a sharp instrument, and then is very carefully processed.

Mastic has beneficiary properties for the gastro-intestinal system recognized worldwide, whereas its strong anti-germ and anti-bacterial action has made modern cosmetics to use it as a principal substance.

Furthermore, mastic impact on diabetes and cholesterol is currently studied, whereas it also contributes to dental health.
Many attempts have been made to produce mastic both in the rest of Greece as well as abroad, however, they have never born any fruit.
It is as if this unique fruit had chosen Chios by itself to be the place where it would be produced
